What is the National Lung Cancer Screening Program?

The National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) is a major public health advancement, focusing on early detection of lung cancer using low-dose CT scans, with the goal of reducing mortality and supporting high-risk populations.

As of 1st July 2025, Medicare will introduce two new lung screening items as part of the NLCSP. Chest Scan partners support the program and provide fast and easy access to low-dose CT scans for eligible patients at no cost.

Lung cancer is Australia’s leading cause of cancer death, taking over 8,500 lives per year, with most cases diagnosed too late for curative treatment. The National Lung Cancer Screening Program aims to encourage early and regular screening to catch lung cancers in the earlier stages when they are most treatable.
